According to his own words, Magritte was plagued by a question: How can you show a glass of water in a painting so that it is not indifferent? And after painting the dozens of glass pictures, he came to a dialectical composition that combines two opposing relationships with water - it contains and repulsive. Magritte called this surreal painting a homage to the dialectic of Hegel.
