Van Gogh was fascinated by the colors of the landscape around the city of Arles. He particularly loved the contrast between the yellow and purple flowers in the fields. In the landscape, he believed he saw a reflection of the world that he knew from his collection of Japanese prints, and he took over elements of their techniques in his paintings.
