The work, which was created in 1884, caused a sensation when it was exhibited in the Paris Salon, because the very deeply cut dress from Madame Gautreau and the very white skin gave an impression of nudity that was perceived as scandalous, so that Singer Sargent in the picture in Madame X changed and corrected a strap that originally ran over the arm. Nevertheless, the painting had to be removed from the salon.
